Norwegian perspective on hydropower and recent research on the effects of flow contraction on spillway capacity.
Mr. Nils Solheim Smith is currently working as a Researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway and as a consultant with the engineering firm Sweco. He is about to finish his PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from NTNU, which is focused on measures to increase spillway capacity in existing run-of-river hydraulic structures. Prior to commencing his PhD, he worked as a research assistant at NTNU, working on large-scale physical model studies and numerical modelling of embankment dams in extreme load scenarios. He holds an MSc in Hydropower Development from NTNU and a BEng in Arctic Technology: geotechnics and natural resources from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Denmark. In addition, he has professional experience as a site engineer with the contractor Per Aarsleff A/S, where he worked on a large harbour construction project in Nuuk, Greenland.
